Full Description
In short, for a person of average fitness, our hike would be considered a demanding but rewarding day.
To give you a better idea here's a run down of a typical day trip: 7:30 AM - we meet at the Out East Adventure Centre in Rocky Harbour for a quick orientation and a hot drink. We then hop back in our cars and drive 30 minutes to the Western Brook Pond parking lot. Here we start our walk in to the pond, which is an easy 3 kilometers walk over mostly flat terrain. Once we get to the water, we take a high speed shuttle boat to the back of the pond. The journey takes about 30 minutes, and we'll tell a couple of stories about the area on the way.
When we arrive at a small dock at the end of the pond, it's clear we've entered another world. Under the leadership of an experienced woods guide, we'll wander through some of the most pristine wilderness in the world, many times it might not seem like we're on a trail at all as we walk along river beds, through forest and meadows and rest under towering rocks and near beautiful waterfalls.
The distance from the boat drop off to the summit and back is approximately 12 kilometers with an elevation gain of 450 meters. These numbers are deceptive however, since this is a back-country hike inside the national park there is minimal trail maintenance done.
We aim to return to the parking lot around 5 - 6 PM, however the actual time can vary as it is dependent on the speed of the group and the conditions for that day. Please keep this in mind, especially if making dinner reservations for after the hike.
