In 2017 Out East Adventures was founded to take people into the backcountry of Gros Morne National Park. We are partnered with BonTours to offer hiking tours to one of the most scenic viewpoints in the province.

We have since expanded our experiences to include tours all over the national park, including multi-day backpacking trips and custom driving tours.

Day Hike

Ascent: 500 meters

Time: 10 Hours

The most famous hike in the park

In short, for a person of average fitness, our hike would be considered a demanding but rewarding day.

To give you a better idea here's a run down of a typical day trip: 7:30 AM - we meet at the Out East Adventure Centre in Rocky Harbour for a quick orientation and a hot drink. We then hop back in our cars and drive 30 minutes to the Western Brook Pond parking lot. Here we start our walk in to the pond, which is an easy 3 kilometers walk over mostly flat terrain. Once we get to the water, we take a high speed shuttle boat to the back of the pond. The journey takes about 30 minutes, and we'll tell a couple of stories about the area on the way.

When we arrive at a small dock at the end of the pond, it's clear we've entered another world. Under the leadership of an experienced woods guide, we'll wander through some of the most pristine wilderness in the world, many times it might not seem like we're on a trail at all as we walk along river beds, through forest and meadows and rest under towering rocks and near beautiful waterfalls.

The distance from the boat drop off to the summit and back is approximately 12 kilometers with an elevation gain of 450 meters. These numbers are deceptive however, since this is a back-country hike inside the national park there is minimal trail maintenance done.

We aim to return to the parking lot around 5 - 6 PM, however the actual time can vary as it is dependent on the speed of the group and the conditions for that day. Please keep this in mind, especially if making dinner reservations for after the hike.

Western Brook Pond

Overnight

A night at one of the best views on the Island

Difficult

Length: 14km + 6km

Ascent: 600 meters

Time: 2 Days

In short, for a person of average fitness, our hike would be considered a demanding but rewarding day.

We begin the first day by meeting at the Out East Adventure Centre at 9am for orientation and to pack lunches. Before setting off, your guide does a final equipment and supply check with everyone, as well as providing a brief overview of the expected conditions for the tour.

In addition to anything you wish to bring yourself, everyone is assigned a portion of the group gear. Typically this consists of a small package of food, a tent, or a sleeping bag; Altogether no more than about 10lbs(5kg) of equipment.

This tour follows the same route as our day tour. we'll wander through some of the most pristine wilderness in the world, many times it might not seem like we're on a trail at all as we walk along river beds, through forest and meadows and rest under towering rocks and near beautiful waterfalls.

Once we get to the viewpoint, we find our campsite nestled amongst the rocks. We take a break here and set up our tents and make ourselves at home. From here we have the option of continuing the hike even further by exploring the top of the valley, accessing several vantage points to take in the stunning valley below us, as well as the rolling hills of the Long Range mountains all around.

After a quick dip in an inviting pool, we enjoy a delicious dinner as the sun begins to set over the steep cliffs in the distance.

The next morning begins with the scent of hot coffee mixing with those of breakfast being cooked. We take an easy morning, enjoying the morning light shining off the surrounding cliffs before packing up camp. After one last look at the fjord, we descend back down into the trees.

We aim to return to the parking lot around 1-2 PM, however the actual time can vary as it is dependent on the speed of the group and the conditions for that day.

The Big Lookout

Panoramic views of the entire park

Moderate

Length: 12km

Ascent: 600 meters

Time: 6 Hours

Overlooking the mouth of Bonne Bay this totally unmarked trail provides a 360 degree panorama of the national park, from the orange of the Tablelands on one side to the distant mound of Gros Morne Mountain on the other with a birds eye view of villages, bogs and forests in between.

On top of the Lookout hills plateau, we leave civilization and the bustle of the village below. With moose wandering through the bogs and rock ptarmigan hiding amongst the rocks the chances of a wildlife encounter is pretty good.

If meeting on the north side of the park, this trip includes a water taxi ride across beautiful Bonne Bay.

The Tablelands is one of the most unique enviroments in the world. Beleived to have been the result of intense tectonic activity, part of the earth's mantle has risen up from below the crust and lies exposed on the surface.

Spend the day marvelling at the unique geology as we hike through the ancient rock. We stop for lunch near a waterfall before making the final push to the top of the tablelands for panaromic views of the bay below.

Long Range Traverse

A day on top of the bottom of the world.

Difficult

Length: 32km

Ascent: 800 meters

Time: 4 Days

The Long Range Traverse is an adventure through the back woods of Gros Morne National park. With criss-crossing caribou leads and winding paths through thick brush this traverse is a challenge to navigate.

The Long Range Traverse has been ranked by National Geographic® as one of the top hikes in the world, and once you first climb atop the plateau and take in the stunning vista below, it's not hard to see why.

Experience for yourself breathtaking vistas and wandering caribou trails. We'll take you through the backyard of one of the most majestic National Parks in Canada.

Sample Itinerary (4 day)

Evening before Day 1

The trip begins at 6pm at the Out east Adventure Centre, where we spend the evening reviewing the overall plan for the trip, where we answer any questions and distribute group gear.

Day 1

We leave the adventure centre at 8:00am and drive to Western Brook Pond. After a short 3km hike along an easy trail and a shuttle boat to the end of the fjord, we begin the ascent. Hiking through picturesque boreal forest we eventually climb 5km to the top of the gorge and camp on top of the Long Range plateau. We enjoy a delicious backpacking meal overlooking one of the most beautiful vistas in eastern North America. It's a tough day, but worth every minute.

Day 2

We take up our backpacks after breakfast and start the trek across the top of the plateau that make up the Long Range mountains. Here we'll discover a new meaning of wet feet as we make our way through all sorts of terrain, including a river crossing. We climb up and over another hill before finding our campsite.

Day 3

Today we begin the second half of our journey through the land that time forgot. We travel over hills and through valleys, following the trails of the moose and caribou until coming atop a crest overlooking the spectacular ten mile pond. Weather and time permitting, we may have a chance to take a short side hike to the vista of Baker's Brook gorge.

Day 4

As all good things must come to an end, our trek begins to wind down with a steep descent into Ferry gulch, an ancient valley carved by the passing of glaciers long ago. From here we make our way along the gros morne mountain trail, finally finishing at the trail head in the afternoon. A quick drive later and we'll be back at our centre, cool beverage in hand and ready to unwind.
